He’s known best as Loki, the brother and cosmic nemesis of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in the Marvel Universe.
But Tom Hiddleston is giving the Norse gods a rest, momentarily at least, as he’s set to star in the upcoming biopic film charting the life of legendary American country singer Hank Williams.
Sony Pictures Classics has released the first image from the film, titled after Williams’ iconic ballad I Saw The Light, and the 34-year-old actor bears an uncanny resemblance to the late musician.
He also wears a suit and tie – no horned helmet or other intergalactic Loki garb here.
With a sullen stare, Hiddleston mirrors classic images of the late musician from the early 1950s.
Born in England, Hiddleston may seem like an unexpected choice to play one of the pioneers of American music.
And the actor is expected to do his own singing in the film – belting out classic numbers like I’m So Lonely I Could Die and forging his best rendition of a good ‘ol boy from Alabama accent.
But it won’t be the first challenging role for Hiddleston as he’s taken on everything from a WWII commander in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse to a suicidal vampire in Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive.
In a fortunate twist of fate, Hiddleston will be joined in I Saw The Light by his current girlfriend Elizabeth Olsen.
Not only will they be starring together, but the 26-year-old actress will be playing Williams’ late wife, Audrey Mae.
Just last month the couple was spotted as they finished up dinner at London’s posh restaurant The Wolseley.
With wholesome melodies mixed with hard-livin’ lyrics, Hank Williams was like the not-so-far-off and often overlooked precursor to Johnny Cash.
The film follows the iconic American musician through his rise to fame and his tragic personal life, culminating in his untimely death alone on New Year’s Day 1953 from heart failure as a result of severe alcoholism. He was only 29.
I Saw The Light debuts in limited release on November 27 before going nationwide.
