Benedict Cumberbatch & Jude Law join buddy scheme for unaccompanied Calais child refugees

Jude Law, Benedict Cumberbatch and Dominic West are among the celebrities and public figures who have pledged to sponsor lone child refugees in the Calais Jungle camp to help reunite them with relatives in the UK.

The well-known figures, who also include X-Files actress Gillian Anderson and broadcaster Mariella Frostrup, have signed up to a buddy system to personally help and support unaccompanied children.

The stars have pledged to visit them in Calais or their families in the UK, contribute towards their legal and humanitarian costs and speak out on their behalf.

Citizens UK estimates there are around 150 unaccompanied youngsters with a legal right to join their relatives in the UK languishing in the cold, muddy and rat-infested Calais camp.

French president Francois Hollande said on Thursday that unaccompanied child refugees in France who have a claim to seek asylum in Britain should be able to reach the UK quickly.

As bulldozers rolled into the camp and mass evictions began this week, volunteers fear lone children could become lost and scattered across northern France with no humanitarian protection.

George Gabriel, lead organizer at Citizens UK, said: “We’re glad that the president and Prime Minister have finally acknowledged the urgency of this problem.

“That these desperate children cannot be left in the chaos of Calais and should instead be reunited with their loved ones as a matter of the utmost urgency.”

The buddy scheme has been set up between Citizens UK, Help Refugees, Good Chance Calais and Letters Live.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Supporting my old drama school is vital for arts…

freewomenxgrape:Benedict Cumberbatch: Supporting my old drama school is vital for artsBenedict Cumberbatch has warned that London could “lose a vital
artistic resource” if his old drama school fails to raise about £3
million to complete its redevelopment. The Sherlock actor joined other alumni of the London Academy of Music
and Dramatic Art, which dates back to 1861, in backing its Act Now!
campaign. It has already raised about £25 million towards building two theatres
and an education wing, with rehearsal space and a digital suite. Cumberbatch, a patron of the appeal, said he was “thrilled” to see Lamda prepare for the future. But he added: “Should we fail to seize this opportunity,
London will lose a vital artistic resource that nourishes the global
performing arts industry, contributes to our economy and enriches our
cultural life.” Other alumni of the Barons Court college include Dominic Cooper,
David Oyelowo, Ruth Wilson, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Jim Broadbent. Broadbent, who won the supporting actor Oscar in 2001 for his
performance in Iris, said: “Without Lamda the industry would be poorer.“ Directors and producers know someone who trained at Lamda will come
to a production with a grown-up, enthusiastic and collaborative approach
 — and that’s gold dust in the rehearsal room, on stage or on set.”http://www.lamda.org.uk/support-us/act-now/take-your-seat

Benedict Cumberbatch recreates Colin Firth’s Mr Darcy for Give Up Clothes For Good cancer campaign

Colin Firth as Mr Darcy in the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice.

SWOON. Actor Benedict Cumberbatch has recreated an iconic moment from Pride And Prejudice, showing off his toned torso to raise money for charity.

The Sherlock star is shown standing in a lake while wearing a white, unbuttoned shirt in an imitation of Colin Firth’s famous scene in the 1995 Pride And Prejudice TV miniseries.

Benedict Cumberbatch, aka Mr Darcy

The image forms part of an exhibition of snaps by Jason Bell in aid of Cancer Research UK, to celebrate ten years since the charity’s first ‘Give Up Clothes For Good’ campaign launch.

Other photographs in the display feature stars including Kate Winslet, Liam Neeson, Charlie Hunnam and Jerry Hall. But really, what can beat Cumberbatch?

The exhibition is taking place at London’s La Galleria until Saturday, raising both money and awareness for the Give Up Clothes For Good appeal. People are encouraged to donate their unwanted clothing to retailer TX Maxx so they can be resold in Cancer Research charity shops.

Benedict Cumberbatch Gets His Mr. Darcy On for Charity

The actor knows how to pull off the Jane Austen character

Benedict Cumberbatch unbuttoned his shirt and got soaking wet in a lake because life is wonderful. Well, actually it was for a “Give Up Clothes for Good” campaign benefiting cancer research, but we get to enjoy the perks of Cumberbatch’s charitable heart.

The actor channeled Mr. Darcy and made everyone forget that anyone else ever looked sexy as the Pride and Prejudice character. Sorry, Colin Firth.

According to Metro UK, TK Maxx and Cancer Research UK are hosting an exhibition featuring this photograph, taken by Jason Bell, as well as other images of actors likeLiam Neeson, Kate Winslet and Elijah Wood. But really, all we need are the outtakes from this BC shoot. Thanks.
